The JD500, JD500A, and JD500B
The Industrial versions of the agricultural 3020
Built 1964-1971

The JD500 replaced the 3010 Wheel at the 1964 model year. The JD500 had basically the same changes as the 3010 Wheel, plus a option, for the Power-Shift transmission. It had eight forward speeds and four reverse, with moving gear changes possible. It was also changed to use a two lever shift. The Syncro-Range transmission was still available.

The JD500 began production at serial number 50000 as a heavy duty Wheel tractor. Beginning at number 101000, the JD500 Series A was introduced as a "Loader Backhoe". Sometime in 1968, the JD500B was introduced, it appears to have wider and heavier fenders than the JD500A.

Here is a list of the differences of the JD500 from the 3020...

  • Cast iron nose frame, for increased weight and protection of the fuel tank
  • Sheet metal made with 10 gauge steel
  • Industrial style grill, flat
  • Frame
    • Rails larger and stronger
    • Holes drilled in different pattern from agricultural versions
    • Frame made with 6 inch C-channel steel
    • Frame extends farther back onto transmission case than ag versions
  • Tread size fixed
  • Larger rear axle housings, with better bearings and axles
  • Heavier Front axle
  • Steering-Uses frame mounted hydraulic cylinders, not motor
  • Two lever gear shifting
    • Right lever shift through all gears
    • Left lever shift through high-low-reverse ranges
    • Left lever located at original position of rockshaft lever
  • Rockshaft lever relocated to right side of seat
  • Different Wheels/Rims, industrials use split rims

JD500 Options (that I know about)
All the hitch, and hydraulic options of the 3020 were also available for the JD500. They could be left off if there was usually no need for them.
