Well, here I am begging for advise again. Got a chance to pull the PTO shaft out of the Power-Trol pump housing. After checking the archives, and the manual, I felt assured that the bearing seal cup should be relatively easy to remove. That rascal would not budge! Had to dig out the old seals to get it off. I want to reuse the $80 cup. The bushing face looks good too. The "wear lip" is not nearly as high as it appears and the bushing counterbore is more than deep enough to clear it. Should I lap it a bit? Seeing the parts sure helped understand how and why it works.
Next, the snap ring grooves had large ridges on the thrust sides that had to be carefully filed away to even get the snap rings off and remove bearing and pump gear. I recut and polished the groove to remove the huge radius "ramp" at the thrust side so the rings could seat and stay put. So, of course the grooves are wider by probably .030 each. Also, the new snap rings are .015" narrower than the old ones. This would allow the bearing to move a total of .090 on the shaft. Wouldn't it be OK to add shims between the bearing and snap rings to minimize the amount of movement of the shaft in the bearing? Would .005 total clearance be about right?
Or should we just try to find a better shaft? This one looks kinda rough, but it's straight, not twisted, and measures out pretty good.
Some pictures of parts in question.

If you could find a N.O.S. Pto shaft, but if you want to buy a used one, it would probably be in the same condition as the one you now have. If these were my parts I would reuse them except for those two fiber shaft seals and snap rings.
