I found this at a JD dealer in Statesville, NC back in August. This is what it looked like when I brought it home. All green phase I serial # 80039.

Here is the latest that I have done on the tractor. I started stripping the paint off the motor and repainting the hard to reach areas with JD factory classic green. I mainly wanted to clean it up to check for any leaks prior to finishing it. It smokes a little on start up, shut down or when you back it down from a high idle. However, I don't plan on rebuilding the motor right now because it does run very well. It will mainly be my putt putt tractor with a little hay raking and wagon pulling, I don't plan on much hard work with it.

Options include: single TOM, 4 speed, lights, 4100 series cultivators, original top-link, 15in front wheels, spin-out rears, rear wheel weights, front weight, cig lighter, and fertilizer distributor.

The problems that I have notice so far are as follows?

Small pin hole leak in the top of the radiator.

Crack in the water jacket in the block. There is no water in the oil or oil in the water. I think a little radiator sealer and JB weld may fix it.

Rockshaft housing has been broken and repaired with a bad weld. For now I plan on JB welding to see if it will hold until I find another housing.

Small "sweating" of gear lube around the rear differentials. I have new gaskets for a repair.

Not sure if the generator is working. Battery gets weak after several starts. I will send it off for rebuild in the coming weeks.

Need a battery tray and left side door.

I may need a new manifold and gasket. There is quite a bit of noise coming from around the manifold that sounds like a leak. The gasket part that I can see is crumbling to pieces.

Steering needs to be tightening. Its pretty loose.

Need new wire hose rings

I plan on sending the sheet metal off to a body repair/painter for refinishing. There are several dents that I cannot fix plus I want to get a good shiny coat of paint on them. The engine, cast, rear end and wheels I believe I can pretty much handle but it will be my first almost complete paint job.

Need to find matching rear tires. I may want to go down to a smaller tire. I currently have 12.4 x 24.

So far I have repaired a leaking PTO shaft seal, replaced rear transmission cover and gasket, replaced valve cover gasket, repaired and painted air cleaner, changed all fluids, started painting hard to reach spots.

UPDATE:

Things are going pretty slow here this winter. Finally got seals for the Touch-o-matic from JD. I will work on these over the holiday. I am still trying to get that crack in the block on the water jacket fixed. I run some liquid glass through it tonight and will see how that does. If it doesn't work my next step is JB weld followed by welding. It doesn't cause a problem for operation it is just somewhat unsightly on the new paint.

I plan on sending the carb off for a rework as well as the generator. The engine runs good but it keeps on burning too rich and there is a ton of soot on the plugs and sheet metal around the muffler. I can't tell if the generator is charging as it reads in the neg numbers when the lights are on and reads -0- with the engine running and lights off. The battery needs charging about once every two weeks even with occasional starts.

I found a muffler I think is closer to being correct for my early 420. I put on the 40/320/M muffler with the flange on it. It sounds much better, doesn't leak around the manifold but will not quite fit down into the top of the manifold. I have it screwed down tight so it doesn't leak.

I also need to work on the steering as it is very loose. It has about half a turn worth of play in it.
