Well here she is finally........My first tractor!!! Needs a lot of work but that's how I wanted it. Always wanted to restore an old John Deere and finally did it. So far I love every minute of working on it.

Looks like a great start Aman! Reminds me of my 37 'A' three years ago. Keep us posted on progress. Looks very good for a start. Was it running when you got it?

Thanks jdnut!! It didn't run when i got it. It had one piston that was stuck, but got it freed up pretty easy. Was told it ran 5 years ago thou. Have to say your tractor turned out great!!! I must have looked at your pics 100 times. Any thing you would have done different? Like payed more or less attention too?
Thanks again

37Aman, you're on a good start on your project. Things I would have done a little differently? About everything. rolleyes.gif In hindsight, you can always do something better than before, but it really boils down to time, money and personal opinion on how far your willing to go to make a difference. Ok, so enough with the philosophy.... The three things I would have done differently are: 1) paint, 2) exhaust coatings and 3) carb rebuild. 1) My paint "problem" was I went to a auto paint shop that specializes in auto/truck/tractor/whathaveyou painting and supplies and after talking to the owner, was impressed with his PPG paint products. He told me that gauranteed, if I used John Deere paint products, that in 6 months, it'd be turning chalky, etc. Wanted me to use his PPG product (which is good by the way). Anyway, I told him I wanted my paint to be mixed up as JD classic color - after whole tractor was complete, found out that the color was more of the newer agricultural color. I think it's a little lighter color than the classic I was wanting. Now, if I need to do spot repaints, I need to have the exact color mixed up again. Not as simple as going to my JD dealer and getting a can. Also, I would paint 4, 5 or 6 coats on - I only sprayed 2 to 3 - I can see now and from others in my club that more coats is usually better. Mine is already showing through in many areas.
The second part 2) I would change would be instead of painting my exhaust manifolding, I'd get it ceramic coated. Painting wears off soon and the normal rust looks reappears, but ceramic coating lasts far longer and is very reasonably priced (about $30 for manifold and piping. The third part 3) I would concentrate on would be to make sure my carb (and mag) are rebuilt well. I did my own carb - it was the 1st time for me so I probably didn't do everything perfect - and while it ran pretty good, could have been alot better. After about a year of running, I took it to a guy that knows these, and for about $60 + parts it came back as a totally different running machine! Started better, idled ALOT better, etc.

So, again, alot of this is personal preferences, but some areas I would definately consider on my next one.

Keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks Greg....That is some very good ideas!! I appreciate you taking the time for those very helpful tips!!! Where did you get the carb work done at? Also the ceramic coating?
jdnut
Well 37Aman, there a large number of people who can rebuild carbs well; I happened to see an ad in our local tractor clubs newsletter about a guy in Oregon who does carbs for $60 + parts. He did such a good job on my 'A' carb, I had him do my "BO' as well. Anyway, check your local guys - I bet you'll find quite a few just a stones throw away from you.

As for Ceramic Coating, I again used a local guy I found in yellow pages. Just shop around on internet and again, you might be surprised to see someone real close to your place.
Some interesting information on pros of Ceramic Coating process:
