Full Version: Kawasaki Fuel Starvation

Oh for the days when the Brigs had a carb with a fuel/power adjustment screw to set how much fuel she got grrrrrrrrrrrrr

I have a Husky Zero Turn with a Kawasaki Twin V 21 which I think is 25 HP.....Recently she began starving for fuel, you know, bad idle cuz she hunts and the govenor keeps revving her back up,,,,,,,,wont run right wide open or when mowing unless you have the choke maybe 1/4 to 1/2 out, Im sure yall get the picture???

I already tried the easy stuff, checked cleaned n blew the fuel lines on BOTH sides of the filter and fuel pump n she has good clean flow there,,,,,,,,gumout down into the carb via the inlet fuel line,,,,,,,gumout via the carbs air intake,,,,,,,air n clean n gumout in the lines and carb inside n outside to the best extent WITHOUT removing the carb (looks like a 2 barrell).......

BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT I cant find any external adjustment screws such as the power/fuel adjustment in the bowl or venturi etc area ANYWHERE GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Its the kind of problem where in the old days you would simply turn the fuel screw out 1/4 turn and no more leaning out problems

Ive heard somethign about valve lash adjustments on those overhead engines but it seems more like I need to turn the power/fuel 1/4 turn out BUT THERE IS NONEEEEEEEEE

did you look for some sort of tamper proof cover hiding any adjustment screw? they might have it hidden under a tamper proof cover so people can't adjust it to keep the emissions people happy? just a guess since all of my vehicles and mowing equipment are old so i can work on them. i know some of the newer yamaha motorcycles have a tamper proof cover over the pilot screw for emissions reasons.

Yep, Im gonna take a much closer look today with my glasses on and a strong light. Im starting to think it could be a vacuum leak between the carb and intake as it sure acts that way, maybe that versus a carb/fuel restriction. Im gonna try what I do on old JD's by spraying WD 40 etc all around base of carb n see if she speeds up and/or smooths out. Maybe a bad carb gasket or o ring or its just loose or maybe a plastic intake manifold with a crack???

unsure.gif Yep I got one of those V Twin Kaw's that says 19 ponies on the air cleaner decal. I never did find any adjustments available on the carb. She idles like a pig - romps up and down and occasionally lets a big poop out the exhaust. Good news on mine is that it runs fine when i have the throttle where the rabbit is.

Anyhow, mine has what I think is the fuel pump in plain view on the side. I doubt if that is your problem, but I have seen one of those needing a kit on a twin briggs once. Putting a kit in there would be a crap shoot unless you could find a way to troubleshoot that puppy.

Just a thought on the fuel starvation issue.

What you describe sounds CLASSIC TO ME like a vacuum leak (carb intake or intake manifold etc) and the more I think Ima thinkin thats my problem versus fuel starvation. Im headed outside soon with a spray can to try n find it. Once my yamaha Golf Cart acted same way with a loud pop out the exhaust now n then n poor lean idle and it was cuz the throttle shaft bushings were suckin air in badddddddddd

being a kawasaki engine, it might have the sliding needle, dipahragm piston type carburetor like the ones on motorcycles and atvs. on those, there are no adjustment screws for fuel enriching or leaning, the only adjustment is a jet change or on the older ones to move a clip up and down in different grooves on the sliding needle. the newer ones do not have those grooves on the needle, so as to keep the emissions people happy.

mayble the diaphragm holding the sliding needle is torn thus not allowing the needle to move properly
