Full Version: 6volt Battery Maintainers

I am just assuming that all the not so costly battery maintainers I see are 12 Volt unsure.gif

Are 6 volt ones readily available somewhere or maybe it is easy to modify a 12 to do 6 V batteries.

How do you folks do it?

The "Battery Tender" brand is available in 6 volt. I bought one on Ebay and they are available form other suppliers, such as Eastwood. I really like it. It can be left on for a long time, and by charging at such a slow rate, then maintaining just enough, it can even reverse sulfation, and sort of renew old batteries.

Thanks, You got me to searching after providing the information. I found one by the same company labeled as a Jr model. It provides .75 amps as opposed to the one you displayed providing 1.25 You think that would provide the same service over a long period of time?

It comes in at a shade over 25 bucks with free s&h right now on amzon.com unsure.gif

Here is the one I use, it works on both 12v and 6v and has a 6,4,and 2 amp charge rate, fully automatic so it can be forgotten and left on the tractor and it is supposed to shutoff when the battery is full and turn back on when it gets low. I like it because it is capable or a relatively fast charge if I need it and since I have several 12v tractors and only 1 6v it is nice to have one charger that does both.

I got a couple of the chargers that can do both 6 and 12 volt. Just leary about leaving them hooked up all the time and too lazy I guess to periodically do it. rolleyes.gif

I lived in Big Bam off and on for 5 years when I was a kid assigned to Ft Ruucker. Man could it brew up some big thunder boomers and twisters down there. blink.gif Oh and awsum fire ant hills. Those were good times. When I go to FL down route 231 it is always a trip down memory lane for me.

I've got two of those 6v battery tenders also. One on my R and one on my '53 Ford. I don't really need the one on the R when I use it regularly, but the one on my ford has really cut down on the number of batteries it's been through. I used to have to get a new battery every year for it, but haven't changed the current one for three years now. I leave it hooked up whenever I'm not using it.

I couldn't open your pics. Are your tenders .75 or 1.25 amps?

Sorry about the pics.

They're 1.25 amps. I got a deal off of ebay, the pair for $35.

Got to agree with Alabamafrog...I've used one just like the one he pictured for 2 years now. Very reliable, compact, light weight plastic case and good price.

Chilton County (Alabama) Peach Parade scheduled for June 27th, Clanton, AL. Lots of tractors usually in that parade. Plan on having one or two of my M's there. Come join us...John

I opted for the larger unit because there was not much difference in price at the time. It has worked well for nearly ten years now. I really like them. Small units like this are often mounted permanently under the hoods of RV's, boats, motorcycles, etc. so that you just plug them in during the long periods of off duty time.

well I got two of those babies in and have them hooked up for about 5 days. One batt has just turned the indicator light green.

Nice.

They came with two different style hook ups for the tractor. One with alligator clips for on a bsatt and one with eyelets for the batt posts and a no brainer can't do it wrong connector to the maintainer.

I am happier in a pig in you know what - on that issue that is.

Now maye this winter if it snows, the 420 will start and I will go out and have fun rolleyes.gif

I have picked up a maintainer at Wal Mart that works really well and will maintain either a 6V or 12V battery. If I remember correctly, they were abot $20.

Need to report back. I think I just fell into doo doo and came out smelling like a rose. laugh.gif

I hooked two of those babies up - one on the 420 and one on the 8N. It took a while for the little led to turn green.

However I cranked up the 420 yesterday and what a difference in cranking pwer. It did not have any spark at first so I had to crank some for testing and a final start up. Made all the difference in the world.

Points? My 40T grubs up the points if it sits more than a week or so. Also, good to hear your battery news.
