Have had this tractor since Feb 2002, a lot has changed since then but one thing has remained, the power steering leaks.
Feb. 2002 the day before the auction at the farm in northern Ohio

Sitting in my new building marking it's territory Feb 20

Measured .010 end play under the steering gear.
Getting the feeling this thing has been apart before. Wonder if the first owner tried to fix this problem too. Just to cold tonight, will be back later. ohmy.gif

Last night lifted the whole assembly off the tractor and lowered it to work on getting the steering gear off. Looks like that might be tougher than expected as it has not moved from the initial atempts.

Worked some more this evening, still cold though. Had a good idea after being unsuccessful getting the steering gear to come off. I made a wood box frame with a 6.5 inch square inside measurement. The spindle quill sits down inside and is supported well above a scrap of 2x12. This allowed the assembly to be firmly supported while I pounded on the pedestal from above to drive it down through the steering gear. Only a few sharp wraps were needed to loosen the the gear, then using the hoist the housing was lifted from the pedestal. Now to look closely at the parts for signs of wear and locate o-rings and seals.

Did not get much done today. Need to order a new updated style vane pin before reassembly. Trying to clean up the oil as I go.

Feeling real good so far. Completed the disassembly tonight and replaced both vane seals. The wear on those seals is obvious. Used lots of very hot water to get the vane seals in place. Plan to clean the spindle quill and spindle then start reassembly.

This is the spindle quill that will be cleaned.

See the o-ring on the inside and the rubber gasket around the outside.

New vane seals in place.

So I had to take the 80 for a ride, it's been a while, OK.

Got her all put back together today. Started her up and the power steering worked fine as it did before. Time will tell if it will leak. I feel confident that the other 70 D's power steering can be fixed. I have a plan, but not much time.

Looks like the air stack needs some straitening, got in a hurry.

It has been over a month, no leaks and everything works as it should. Still working on the other 70 D power steering.
