The engine on my 1983 JD 314 tractor is starting to use a small amount of oil. I'm thinking it is time to bore the cylinder to the next size and install a new piston, rings, gaskets and seals. According to the John Deere parts list, there are oversize pistons and rings available for this engine but I have not found a machine shop in my region who is interested in boring and honing the engine block for me. Has any member of this board done this? Can anyone recommend a reputable shop that I could send the engine to for boring and honing? I love this tractor and with a rebuilt engine I can get another 30 years out of it. Thanks!!

I had the Kohler K-block bored for my 214 back during the end of the winter of early 1994. Back then a little shop did it for me and he had maybe 6 of them lined up from all over the small town of Findlay, Ohio. I think it cost me $25.00.
I had to go to .020" over because a ring broke and caused a .015" gouge. Bought the parts from Deere, but also think that a place like Jack's Small Engine on the web handle them today as well. Sold it in 1995 in Florida, and the fellow then moved back to Lima, Ohio, and it is still running today. Spoke to him not long ago. Good luck.

http://members.aol.com/pullingtractor/engine.htm This site has data from a engine genious for any Kohler rebuilder to consider, even stock.
For those who pull. This guy manages to get more power out of a Kohler engine than from a stock JD model B.
