hi there all who read this ... My name is Matt .. I live in east TX ... Diesel Tech is my trade/craft ( thats how i can buy new toys) ... I have had {still have at that} a fondness for vintage equipment for a good 20+ years ... Spent a bit working in a JD lawn and garden repair shop doing work/repairs on most if not all of the compact tractor and commercial mowing equipment that came into Our shop... new to the bullitin board type of on line communication ... so please give me a brief respite from jokes jest puns and the what-not ...

OK ... Here is the real inquiry ..... I am just a few days ... maybe 5 ... from purchasing a new{old} tractor ... it is a Deere ... it is of the 50's era from what little i have been told ... the owner has not spoken to myself directly as of yet .. being that we use a messenger to communicate ... i dont know why ..with that being said .. from what i have gathered by looking at 'grainy at best' photos and what i have been told i belive it to be a Model G ""OOORRRRR""" a Model 70 .... i am hoping "G" ... from what i remember seeing in pictures (that are now gone) ... is that the flywheel has a shroud the 'looked' completely circular .. it has what looked like a distributor on right side just in front of the cowling ... and also which i cannot find anywhere - is a small hydraulic pump that has hoses that run to a small gearbox just in front of the steering wheel ... the steering shaft does NOT turn / point immediately downward in front of the operators seat/place .. it does follow the hoodline towards the front just short of the radiator ... the intake and exhaust are side by side about midway the lenght of the hood .... also the wheels from what i am told are re-positionable on the axle shafts {and have to be moved via big ol' hammer)...

Now mind you ... i am typing this description from memory that is about three months old ... and i hope that there is enough info that someone can give me an idea of the type of tractor ... or at least point me in the proper direction in order to find out .....

Oh ... and he has not revealed the Serial Number to me as of yet ,,,,,

thnx in advance for your patience and help ....

Matt

Silverhare75,If it wasn't for new guys , there wouldn't be any old guys , I guess. wink.gif You have come to the right place. I'll start with my "guess" and will hopefully get some more input. I'm gonna base my guess on the round flywheel cover, side-by-side stacks ,and large hammer wheel adjustment. Without any other info, this is a guess that the PS is prob. an add on Charlin (sp?) pump .Therefore I guess G 50-52 model year. If the wheel adjust is rack and pinnion I reserve the right to change to a 70. Hope someone else jumps in here. Welcome aboard and let us know if you find out any more info. take care... Dave

I'll bet if you post one of the grainy worthless pictures one of us will know for sure. Welcome to the hobby, you'll gain hours of enjoyment and stress relief from this!

OK guys ... so I lied ... this tractor is NOT a Model G ... This one is a Model A .. {yippy-kai-yay [feel the excitement]} ... and it is a 1952 ... no S/N as of yet though .... As soon as I figure out how to post pix of it I shall ....

And now on to the quest for information on it .. As in which books and/or service manuals i should seek out and purchase ,,,, So when the pixs are up ... All will see what is in store for me ...

Cool runnings...

sylverhare75,
Here's a link to one source of manuals for your A. I also have an A (1946 slant dash)and have gotten by with just an IT manual so far. It has all the pertinent info. However, when I get into restoring it one of these days I'll have to get a parts catalogue at least.

ok ... Got the S/N .. And have come to find out - through my research ( which may be incorrect) .. I have found the S/N 652XXX is NOT a 52 .. But a 50 ( middle of the road) .. And as some can see, spotty information from a seller can make certain things a wee bit difficult... i have some pix posted somewhere in this cyberland ... I think the link below 'should' work ...
Take a look and tell me wha'cha think ..

50 A Pix

cool runnings

Choo,

I too have a '46 slant dash. I hear they are somewhat rare. Any comments on this?
