Well here we go again. biggrin.gif
This one got put on hold earlier, so now its time to get back to some of my stuff.
I dont have any pics of what I started with, but if you took off the tin work, dismantled the engine down to the block and took the rear rims and tires-parked it in a groove for who knows how long and leave the motor open thats what I started with.

Heres where I'll start-
With a "BARE" case-

I like your notes on the cardboard. Around my place i keep a padlock on my shop no one goes in but me unless i'm in there. I don't need any favors blink.gif if you know what i mean . Looks like a good job.

2/21/06 Whew-Its been awhile ohmy.gif

Been busy and hadn't had much time to work on the 70 or post about when I did.

Here's why the tranny had to come all apart mad.gif Bottom shaft clear on the right side of the case.
The tooth on the top set of gears is ONE of the worst of five chiped teeth- check out the middle of the gear, seems like theres some abnormal wear here. The bearing looked good so I'll have to do some checking and playing around with it upon reinstalling it.

Got a little crazy on this one and descided to smoothen out all the cast blink.gif Took me 8 hrs to do the main case and a friend wanted to try so he worked on the frame for about 4hrs. LOTS more stuff to smooth out, takes time and its a messy job, so I try to do it outside.

Area's like this take the most time-
user posted image
Frame is pretty much done except for a few small spots
user posted image

Started doing tin work as well.
For some reason someone had cut the tin AND the hoods frame work here either with a sawsall or hacksaw, this was ALOT of fun to fix and fit.
user posted image

Hood is pretty good and staight and wont take a whole lot of work except by the muffler hole, that hole in the rear is where the hour meter was mounted.
user posted image

This old baby had 2266 hours on her-now if it was put on when new-later in its life, after a overhaul or the hour meter quit I dont know for sure.
But the old one is JUNK- So I just paid attention to a "junk box" at a farm sale one day and got a New one (old new) for $3 cool.gif Ha ha ha!!

Well I'm waiting for parts for the rear end and some of the internal motor parts (they should be here in about a week)
The cam is getting "worked on" I have new tires for the front, all the yellow parts are already done and under cover and the carb and dist. will go in to get worked on this week. I'll keep working on tin work and casting "smoothing" and plan on starting to get the dash set up, possibly next week.

Looks impressive, maybe you could have saved some time by smoothing all that cast with a spray gun? rolleyes.gif
Who is "working" on your cam? Hopefully it went to Berry's, I've been real impressed with the ones we've had done.
You say you have new front tires, what do you have planned for rear tires? biggrin.gif

Started putting the motor back together today- I have to get it up off the blocks so I can finish with the oil pump and lines and I still have to put the cam and lifters in.
After I get the tranny back in and put the rearend back on, I'll put my 9-bolt hubs and wheels on for now, block the front and start building the rest of the motor and then install the frame.

New oil filter can $136!!! ohmy.gif

It cost me about $600 to get main bearings, grind the crank and fit the main bearings (bearings come as blanks and have to be pushed into the housing, cut and finsh fit to the crank. My machining bill was over $400 blink.gif )
Add $300 worth of gaskets and seals and the thought that "maybe I should of left it in the groove" haunts ya dry.gif
I still have rings and rod bearings to go wink.gif
PLUS THE REST OF THE TRACTOR- Oh well it'll be worth it. cool.gif

Sunday 3/19/06

Put the tranny back in (thank god dad was around, I needed the extra hands biggrin.gif ) Took us a little over 4 hours by the time we trial fit everything and got the bearings shimmed to where we wanted them. Tranny is SMOOTH now!! (or at least as smooth as straight cut gears can be dry.gif )

Monday 3/20/06

Put the rearend housing on, my set of 9 bolt hubs and my "restoration rims and tires". Breaks are tore TOTALLY apart and all the parts are being bead blasted today, depending on if we decide to use the brake pads or install new ones, the breaks could either go back together and on tonight or later in the week.
I also installed the bottom half of the shifter. I'm trying to get the main transmission and motor all sealed up so I can smooth some more and then sandblast.

user posted image
Installed the live PTO gear and the primary drive gear and the bottom of the shifter

user posted image
installed the engine block, oil pump and all but 2 oil lines. I've got the lifters in and the cam ready to go in I just want to finish the 2 remaining oil lines before that goes in because its getting kinda tight to work in the engine compartment.

bolts to hold the cover of the high low gears are being shot machined today and that cover will go on tonight.

I'm doing some head work and have to order rings and rod bearings so hopefully that should all come together next week.

Sunday 3/26/06

Did some sand blasting and smoothing as well as some more disassembly on some odds and ends parts. Made a list of parts to get ordered and tried to make a better plan of attack. I have to have this done for our towns 150th anniversary in mid july, so I've got a long road to travel!! blink.gif Waiting for my rod bearings as well as rings, and then I have to finish my head work before I can do final assembly on the motor. Brakes should be ready by this weekend I hope. I'll finish smoothing and blasting the frame so its ready for assembly and then I can get the front wheels on. I got the steering wheel ready to be sent off for recovering and hope to have that by the lesuer swap meet. I have to go to the parts yard on saturday-mainly for some clutch parts.
I've been working on my new toy a little more then the 70, since I need it- I recently bought a 4020 diesel standard to replace my early 4010 diesel on the loader. Right now its having some injector pump work done and I have to rebuild the hydraulic boxes to fix a leak, as well as the usual maintance and leak fixes. I also have the starter and alternator out for a rebuild. Other then needing a bath, its a really nice tractor and should suit its purpose just fine.
The 4010 was my dads first tractor (serial #805) it was the "show room" tractor in esterville Iowa when deere went from the 2 cylinders to the new generations!! Dad had a M&W turbo on it and so far I've bought all the M&W parts available for it except the fan and a motor kit. I doubt I'll get a M&W motor kit for it, but who knows. Should be a pretty cool show piece when its done, especially with the 5-16's F145 I got for it, both of which I HOPE to restore next winter, UNLESS I do my "G" Who knows. wink.gif I'll just have to see how the pocket book reacts after the 70!! unsure.gif

Sandblasted parts pile with more to come!! ohmy.gif

Disassembled govenor assembly. Everything looks REAL good here, I'll probably take the weights and make sure they both weigh the same, and then do the proper shimming of the bearing upon assembly. Other then that, so far this whole tractor either looks to have had really good care or not have been worked really hard, all the parts have little to no wear. Just for instance, the valve stems and valve guides measure at factory specs and show NO wear!! blink.gif
Just short of the chipped tranny gear being bad. The gear looks like it was just a case of bad casting from the factory, the teeth were not "chipped" by abuse BUT the missing pieces seem to have just "blown" out of the teeth, like the metal it was made from had "bad" casting spots.

Hi, Wow... I read the D restoration you did and well...WOW!!! I can't wait for this one. I'm looking for a 2 cyl. to restore now and if I do mine half as good I'll be very happy. biggrin.gif Great job!!!

Keep'em coming,

WOW!! have I been slacking off!!! Actually been busy getting my 4020 back together along with getting the rest of the iron ready for spring.
BUT I do have the brakes done, totally rebuilt the clutch and got alot of pieces "smoothed" out and ready for installing. I have some more work to do on the head, I got my piston rings and rod bearings SOO hopefully sunday I can finish sticking the motor together and install the frame and possibly the front end. I've set aside 10 PM to midnight for working on just the 70 so that helps, when nobody is around to bug me. Monday I should have lots of pics to post.
Have a happy Easter biggrin.gif

Been working on and off on the ole' 70 lately. Did hower discover that you should have the cam in BEFORE the crank. I had to do some creative grinding on the cam to get it past a cam follower. I got one piston installed last night and will do the second one tonight. After I bend some of the internal oil lines some to make sure they dont get hit by anything I can button the motor up. Since the pistons and rods were out of the tractor and had been for some time, it takes me awhile to clean them up for install, plus cleaning the pistons and rings up- took me about 2 hours to do 1 piston from start to install.
Did some other things to the final drive, fitting gears and bearings and the clutch all together, that looks like it will all work out good. got the govenor back together and ready for installing it.

My creative grinding to get the cam in, I was WAYYY to far to tear it back down to do it the RIGHT way.

You cant really see the cleaned up bores in this pick, but it gives ya a idea what the holes look like before they are filled with piston!!

That sure looks like an M&W way down in that hole. Is it true?

Might be-theres a reason for the sleeves that you can see in the pics!!! ohmy.gif
Wayy to POINT that out!!!
It'll be as stock as everybody else on the track!!! cool.gif

Amazing what you can get done when it rains over 3" and you cant go to the field.
It actually looks like a tractor again (kinda- you gotta really look ph34r.gif )

The govenor housing is ready to get installed tonight along with the rearend.

I forgot to order one double sided clutch pac otherwise this would be done- I'll order that today.

Brakes are ready to be installed as soon as I clean up the main houseing so they go in nice and easy, right now the hole they slide through is a little rusty so I'll just take my old cylinder hone and clean them up so I dont have to fight to get the brakes in.
Hopefully by the weekend I can get every thing sealed up so I can run it out side and do some sandblasting and a little more smothing of some cast parts and possibly start painting. ohmy.gif

I ordered new gaskets and seals for the PTO assembly so I can tear that apart and go through it-
After that I'll look in the the power-trol and see whats shaken in there and apply new gaskets and seals as well.

I ordered all the gaskets and seals I need for the fan shaft assembly so that can get tore down and rebuilt, I should have the head back tomorrow then I can do the valves and install it as well along with the intake.
Next big thing to tackle is the radiator and water pump.

Tore the PTO assembly apart it looks as though it was leaking fairly bad so I figured I would tear it down and put new gaskets and seals in it- they should be here on saturday morning along with the stuff to rebuild the fan shaft assembly and ventilator pump. I blasted everything I had left to blast for now which was basically the tin work and gas tank.

Its been awhile since I had time to update this!!!

Well, I got the motor back together and all the parts sand blasted, I have a little cleaning up to do and alittle "smoothing" left to do on a few parts and then I can prime it tonight. I have the front rims painted and the tires mounted and the rear rims are painted, as soon as I get the main tractor painted I'll put the rear cast on mount the rims and then mount the tires (alot easier to use the tires own weight when mounting them)

I skipped quite a few days worth of work on it but the out come is the same I guess.
This was the 3rd and final coat, Hopefully in about 2 days I can get the clear coat on.
I'll put the "main" tractor together, do the wireing and put the tires on then move it to the other shed to keep the overspray and dust from doing the body work off of it.

Been awhile!!!
Finally got it done- pulled with it a couple weeks ago and last saturday got to put it on a threshing machine!! Kinda fun-something different to do with the ole girl.

Of course it had to foul a plug right away!!!

Only things I have left to do are fix a couple of runs on the front nose cone- apply the "70" decal and put the front emblem on.
